1959 Triumph TR3A

1959 Triumph TR3A

About This Vehicle

Every collector remembers the cars they didn't buy.

This 1959 Triumph TR3A was one of those moments.

I recently inspected it during a classic car auction.

Mechanically simple.
Beautifully restored.
Full of character.

As professionals in sourcing collectible vehicles, we spend most of our time analysing market values, originality, provenance and restoration quality.

Occasionally, however, a car bypasses the spreadsheet entirely.

The Triumph TR3A represents a period when driving enjoyment wasn't measured in horsepower, lap times or technology.

It was measured by connection.

A lightweight chassis.
A naturally aspirated four-cylinder.
A manual gearbox.
A wooden steering wheel.

Everything the driver needed—and nothing more.

This particular example had been comprehensively restored, repainted from its original British Racing Green into Signal Red, and travelled fewer than 900 miles since completion.

I seriously considered buying it for myself.

Ultimately, I walked away.

Not because it wasn't good enough.

Simply because every collector has to remain disciplined. There will always be another opportunity, and sometimes saying "no" today allows you to say "yes" to the right car tomorrow.

One lesson continues to prove true:

The cars you don't buy often stay in your memory longer than the ones you do.

What's the one classic car you still regret walking away from?
